Hyderabad: Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) has expressed deep sorrow on the demise of Prof. Burra Ramulu, eminent human rights activist and Vice-President of Human Rights Forum. “It is a great loss not only to HRF but to the entire human rights movement,” said Lateef Mohd Khan, General Secretary, CLMC.
Professor of economics at Kakatiya University, Burra Ramulu died in Warangal in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday (14th May). He was 58 and is survived by wife and two daughters. Prof. Ramulu was ailing from throat cancer and was completely bedridden for many months.
“On behalf of Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee I express my grief and sorrow on the demise of great human rights activist Dr. Burra Ramulu. I express my deep condolences and solidarity with the family members and the activists of Human Rights Forum to which he belonged. It is a great loss not only to HRF but to the entire human rights movement, because Burra Ramulu was very much connected to the grass root level activism,” said Lateef Mohd Khan.
In the era of draconian law of POTA when entire Warangal region was turned into a Police region and all the human rights and civil liberties activists were forced to leave the region, at that high time Burra Ramulu was the person who firmly resisted the atrocities, raised the voice against the human rights violation. I can say that Burra Ramulu was a brave and kind hearted person who has Dedicated his Life to the Liberation of the Oppressed and protection of their rights. He challenged the police encounters saying they are fake. He was part of many fact-finding missions along with Balagopal and other activists of Human Rights Forum. There are very few people among the rights activists, who prefer to stay back in their village and fight against atrocities, whereas many prefer to be in the cities to work for the rights of the people. It is high time for all the human and civil rights movements that many senior stalwarts of human and civil rights organizations are leaving us in the path of fighting against injustice and oppression, therefore it is the responsibility of the younger generation to take come forward and work for the Human and Civil rights movement and fulfill the vacuum created by these stalwarts, Khan said in his condolence message.
