Delhi HC refuses to stay NCMEI order granting minority status to Jamia

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today refused to put stay on the judgement of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) which conferred minority status to Jamia Millia Islamia. The NCMEI judgement was challenged in the High Court by an NGO Yuva Bharti Samiti.

On March 24, 2011, the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna had admitted public interest litigation (PIL) of Vijay Kumar Sharma, president of NGO ‘Yuva Bharti Samiti’, challenging the declaration of the university a minority institution by NCMEI. Issuing notice to the Union Ministries of HRD and Minority Affairs, the court had asked them to file their responses by today May 18.

Hearing the case today, the High Court refused to grant stay on the NCMEI judgement. The next date of hearing is 14th July 2011.
