Jerusalem : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his call on the international community to step up sanctions against Iran over the potential threats its nuclear programme poses for Israel and the world.
Speaking at a joint press conference Thursday in Jerusalem with his Romanian counterpart Emil Boc, Netanyahu said the new economic sanctions on Iran announced earlier this week were “very important, but not enough”, Xinhua reported.
“Effective sanctions should also be imposed on Iran’s petroleum industries and central bank, and soon. I don’t know if they will help, but we won’t know unless we try,” he said.
US President Barack Obama has also announced a new round of sanctions targeting Iran’s petrochemicals industry. Britain, France and Canada also said they would join the US to intensify financial measures against Iran.
“The purpose of Iran’s nuclear programme is no longer disputable,” Netanyahu said, referring to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which claimed that Tehran was clandestinely seeking to produce nuclear weapons.
Iran has claimed its nuclear activities were meant for peaceful purposes.
