Kolkata : Day two of the 48-hour shutdown called by the Maoists in protest against the killing of rebel leader Kishenji evoked a lukeworm response in the ultra-hit areas of West Bengal, police said Sunday. No incident of violence was reported.
“There was not much response to the shutdown with only private buses keeping off the road. Being a Sunday, the educational and commercial organisations remain closed.
“However, a few Maoist posters and an empty tiffin box were found which people thought to be a bomb in Goaltore. No untoward incident has happened the entire day,” West Midnapore Superintendent of Police (SP) Pravin Tripathi told IANS.
The state wide shutdown evoked some response only in Junglemahal – the forested parts of the three western districts of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore where the rebels have a stronghold.
“The shutdown was peaceful with only partial response. No untoward incident had been reported so far,” Purulia SP Sunil Chowdhury said.
Bankura SP Pranav Kumar also said the shutdown was peaceful with only few shops and private buses not operating.
Communist Party of India-Maoist’s (CPI-Maoist) politburo member Kishenji, whose real name was Mallojula Koteshwar Rao, was gunned down by the security forces Thursday in West Midnapore district’s Burishole, 10 km from the border with Jharkhand.
