Thiruvananthapuram: The Social Democratic Party of India will continue strong protests till Minister of Social Welfare and Panchayats Dr MK Muneer resigns, said Nasarudheen Elamaram, state president of the SDPI. He was inaugurating the party’s march to the Minister’s official residence demanding his resignation following the ‘Wikileaks’ revelations showing his relations with the US Consulate officials.
Mr Elamaram opined that the dangerous minister was an insult to the land. Those who are used to betray will repeat it wherever they are. If the Chief Minister does not throw him out, the SDPI will approach the Governor, he added.
The march began at Palayam Rakthasaakshi Mandapam and was stopped by the police at the Nandankode Devaswom Board Junction. The public march was led by State Secretary A Noorjahan, State Treasurer Samkutty Jacob and District president Kunnil Shajahan among others. State Committee leaders CG Unni and Jaleel Kadakkal spoke.
The march was organised demanding the resignation of Minister Dr MK Muneer who, according to the ‘Wikileaks’ revelations, had spoken to the American officials in the Chennai Consulate of the US about matters in Kerala. Muneer had reportedly told the officials that the NDF (a former organisation led by the leaders of the PFI and SDPI) was a terrorist outfit, though not reaching the levels of the Al Qaeda, and that the organisation held training camps in the mountainous district of Wayanad in Malabar. He is said to have accused party leader and Industries Minister PK Kunjalikkutty of having a soft-corner for the NDF. The revelations had created ripples in the state as several political leaders including those of the CPI (M) and the ministers in the former LDF government also had spoken to the US officials. However, the news about Muneer created disturbances in the Muslim League also, especially since Muneer is a state secretary of the party.
