Thiruvananthapuram : The pandemonium created by the Left opposition over Kerala Speaker G. Karthikeyan’s decision to suspend two first-time CPI-M legislators for two days for unruly behaviour spilled on to the streets Tuesday.
T.V. Rajesh and James Mathew of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) were suspended for two days by Karthikeyan Monday.
While a majority of the Left legislators spent the night on the floor of the assembly along with the suspended legislators, Tuesday morning just before question hour at 8.30 a.m, Rajesh and Mathew left the assembly.
The others squatted on the floor of the assembly, shouting slogans. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the ruckus would make it impossible to go ahead with the question hour and zero hour and the other listed business of the day should proceed.
Soon the speaker rushed through the proceedings of the listed business for the day and then adjourned the house.
With this the suspension of the two legislators was also over and they will be able to come back to the assembly Wednesday.
Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan told the media said they were taking the indiscriminate undemocratic act of suspending the legislators to the streets.
“People should be made aware of what is happening here and the way in which democratic principles of the house are being misused by the government,” said Achuthanandan.
“The theory of the two legislators misbehaving with the woman guard has been proved wrong with the visuals being released. Did you all see the way Agricultural Minister K.P. Mohanan behaved in the house with his legs up on the desk?”
Later, the Left legislators took to the streets and Achuthanandan addressed a public gathering explaining why they had resorted to such action.
“The Chandy government is violating the rule of the land in all matters and is running the affairs of the government in his own way. We will be doing our duty to bring to your attention each time a wrong is done,” said Achuthanandan.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is in turn organising meetings to explain things to people in all the 140 assembly constituencies in the state Tuesday.
