Raipur: The Congress in Chhattisgarh Monday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for “lengthy and lavish” state foundation anniversary functions in the wake of floods and rising misery of farmers across the state.

“We all are feeling proud on the state’s foundation anniversary but it must be held with simplicity in the backdrop of floods faced by several districts recently, rising misery of farmers and the shocking case in which dozens of people were blinded after being operated at a government health camp,” Congress state president Nandkumar Patel said in a statement.

“I can’t understand the reason for lengthy and lavish anniversary functions this year, taking into account a series of recent incidents that have agonised people of the state in a massive way,” he added.

The state government is holding a five-day anniversary celebration in all the 18 districts from Tuesday to mark the foundation anniversary of the state. Chhattisgarh came into existence Nov 1, 2000, after it was sliced off from Madhya Pradesh.

The BJP government will organise a series of cultural functions at districts headquarters with main function to be held in this capital city.
