Dhaka: Bangladesh has sought an explanation from India over the postponement of the Teesta water accord.
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mizarul Kayes sought an explanation from the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Rajeet Mitter, for delaying the Teesta river water sharing deal, reported the Daily Star Tuesday.
“It is not acceptable to us at all” if India does not sign the deal after finalising details, said Kayes.
Mitter assured him that the accord would be inked as quickly as possible after finishing due consultation.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was supposed to accompany Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the Sep 6-7 visit, refused to join the delegation to protest the final draft of the Teesta river water sharing agreement.
The Teesta, which begins its journey in Sikkim, flows through north Bengal before entering Bangladesh.
