Chennai Mayor poll: SDPI candidate endorsed by Dalits, Christians

Chennai: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has brighten its winning prospects in Chennai mayoral election by securing endorsement not from just Muslim organizations but some Dalit and Christian groups also. SDPI has fielded Mr S. Ameer, North Chennai district president of the party, for the Chennai Mayor seat.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, a Dalit political party, various Muslim organizations including Jamaat-e-Islami, Welfare Party of India and Jamiat Ulema have announced their support to SDPI candidate Ameer. Some Christian organizations have also extended their support to SDPI candidate.

Today is the last day for filing nominations for the Chennai mayor seat. Around 20 candidates including the candidates of Desiya Murppokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) have so far filed their nominations.

SDPI has reportedly formed a third front for the coming Tamil Nadu local body election. The group has formed an alliance with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Welfare Party of India, Sunnath Jamaath, Jamathul Ulama and several other Muslim organizations as well as some Christian organisations.

The alliance is contesting in nine out of ten corporations in the state, namely Chennai, Madurai, Covai, Tirchy, Erode, Thirunelveli, Thirupur, Vellore, Salem).
