New Delhi: A study published in the journal BMC Public Health reports that the attitude of Muslim women is slightly more favorable towards abortion than Hindu women.
The study is based on a survey of 1411 married women in two districts each of Bihar and Jharkhand. The study was conducted by Ipas, an NGO that work towards ending preventable deaths and disabilities from unsafe abortion.
Unsafe abortion is linked with maternal mortality. According to the study authors, “in India, 12,000 deaths each year result from abortion-related complications.”
Favorable attitude towards abortion was found to be even higher for women categorized as belonging to other religious groups (i.e. not Hindu or Muslim).
The study published in the latest issue open access and peer-reviewed BMC Public Health concluded that the favorable attitudes toward abortion were associated with socio-demographic characteristics such as higher levels of education, being in the other religion category, and membership in the General caste group.
Favorable attitudes were also associated with knowledge of the legal status of abortion, knowledge of a source of abortion services, knowledge of an abortion method, and exposure to an abortion message.
