Kolkata : Under severe criticism from all sections of society over the transfer of police officer Damayanti Sen, who single-handedly cracked the Park Street rape case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday said it was her government’s “right” of her government to decide who shut perform what job.
“It is the right of the state government to decide what should be done or what should not to be done. It is our prerogative to get the job done by someone who is more effective. What is going on in the section of media is nothing but yellow journalism. The editor of a newspaper has the right to decide its policy and chose its staff. Likewise, the government also the right to make independent decisions,” said Banerjee while addressing a programme here.
Banerjee also slammed the media. “Those who are deliberately maligning the government by using fake stories, how can they claim to be impartial? One can disagree with my policies but they should not use the might of the pen for serving vested interests,” she said.
Damayanti Sen, Kolkata’s first woman joint commissioner of police (Crime) who endeared herself to the masses by her single-minded pursuit and subsequent cracking of the sensational Park Street rape case, was shunted out Wednesday to an insignificant post, triggering angry reactions across Kolkata.
Sen has now been made Deputy Inspector General of Police (Training) in Barrackpore.
