New Delhi: The Welfare Party of India has extended its support to the five–day sit-in programme by Left parties at Jantar Mantar against price rise and demanding right to food through universal public distribution system (PDS). Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas and P.C.Hamza, general secretaries of the Party visited the sit-in programme and conveyed the support sharing the dais for a while.
In separate letters addressed to CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy, RSP general secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan and and Debabrata Biswas, general secretary, All India Forward Block, Dr. S. Q. R. Ilyas, General Secretary of the party said that the UPA led central government and its white collar planning commission have been completely out off from common man and that is why humane touch is missing in its schemes and programmes.
In the letter it was noted that while government warehouses were full with food grains common men suffer due to malnutrition and starvation. The Party extended support to the demand for scrapping the Montek Singh Ahluwalia led Planning Commission’s spurious figures for BPL & APL categorisation that mocks the Indian poor again and again. The Party demanded universal PDS so that food will reach to all needy.
Charging the government guilty for the price rise, the Party asked the central government to intervene strongly to control price rise and to make essential commodities available at fair price. In the letter, Dr. Ilyas shared a common feeling of the people that mainstream parties are not seriously bothered about their plight and hoped that the sit-in programme will convey a message to them that they are not left high and dry.
