Kolkata : A West Bengal minister Sunday termed the reports of alleged rapes as a “rotten campaign” against the government and denied that the law and order situation in the state had slackened.
Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee said: “If you compare the law and order situation of Bengal with other states, then it will be clearly seen that law and order situation here is much better than other states.”
“Earlier too such kind of things used to happen, but they were not reported. But now-a-days it is being reported in a big way,” Mukherjee said.
“The condition of law and order is much better than the previous regime. This is a rotten campaign to malign the government,” he said.
In the last few months, there have been reports about an alleged rise in the number of rape cases in the state.
On Saturday, police said they arrested a man for his involvement in the alleged gangrape of a 22-year-old woman in south Kolkata.
Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim also tried to defend the law and order situation by asking the media to report news stories related to morality.
“We condemn such incidents of rape. But the media houses should also keep one thing in mind that they should report news stories which help to increase moral values,” said Hakim Saturday.
