The shutdown has hit power supply to states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The silt content in the Satluj river, on which both the projects are located, remained much higher than the permissible limit due to continuous rainfall, V.K. Verma, SJVNL deputy general manager, told IANS.

Likewise, NHPC’s 300 MW Chamera stage II located on the Ravi river in Chamba district remained closed. It was shut Tuesday.

However, state-run Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Ltd.’s 120-MW Bhava project in Kinnaur district and 5 MW Andhra project in Shimla district, which also were closed Tuesday due to high silt levels, resumed generation Wednesday.

SJVNL’s officials said the closure of power generation has caused a daily loss of Rs.9 crore.

The SJVNL, a joint venture between the centre and the state government, generates about 38 million units daily.
