Hyderabad : The situation in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh continued to be tense with sporadic incidents of violence taking place in some areas Wednesday.
Three people, including a senior police official, were injured in stone pelting by a mob at Yellareddyguda.
Inspector General of Police Rajiv Ratan sustained minor injuries when a mob attacked his vehicle. Two passengers of a bus of the state road transport corporation were also injured in the stone pelting.
Prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more people remained in force in Nalgonda town, about 100 km from here, for the third day Wednesday while Lord Ayappa devotees continued their protest demanding action against policemen who resorted to baton charge on them Tuesday.
Police have also imposed prohibitory orders in Bhongir town and beefed up security to prevent any untoward incident. Police said the situation was tense but under control. More than 50 people were arrested in connection with the violent incidents in the last two days.
Ayappa devotees and their supporters staged road blockades at various places in the district during the day-long shutdown called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other organisations to protest Tuesday’s incident.
Police burst teargas shells and baton charged a mob Tuesday, that was trying to take out a rally. The protestors attacked a police outpost and some buses.
Some people tried to take out a rally to protest police inaction after a two-wheeler rider allegedly attacked an autorickshaw driver, an Ayappa devotee, Monday.
That minor incident led to communal violence, police said. Senior police officials are camping in the town to monitor the situation.
