Rajiv Chowk, in Connaught Place, is the busiest station on the Delhi Metro network with a footfall of about five lakh commuters a day.

Delhi Metro shut nine stations on the request of Delhi Police who wanted to prevent people protesting against the brutal gang-rape of a young woman from reaching the city centre.

“Some gates at (the two) stations have been opened to facilitate commuters,” the official said. Rajiv Chowk station has eight entry gates and Central Secretariat five.

“However, the exit gates continue to remain closed,” the official said.

Both Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, which gets some 25,000 commuters a day, are inter-change stations.

Besides Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, the other stations that remained shut Monday were Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhavan, Race Course, Khan Market and Pragati Maidan.
