The core group is set to probe how angry public protests were handled by the police.

The core group had met Tuesday after angry protestors, many of them young and women, took to the streets for days on end, demanding justice for the rape victim and a stringent anti-rape law. Police had cracked down on the protests, which had turned violent over the weekend.

Party sources said the core group reviewed the widespread public anger against the ghastly incident, the victim’s serious condition and the handling of protests by police.

The core group felt that calm must prevail before the government gets down to identifying loopholes in the police handling of the situation.

Sources said the core group also discussed the national development council meeting to be attended by all chief ministers Dec 27, and the home minister’s meet on the Telangana issue Dec 28.

The meeting, held at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s official residence here, was attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Finance Minister P.Chidambaram and Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel.
