Bangladeshi in fake currency racket nabbed in Bengal

Murshidabad (West Bengal) : A Bangladeshi national said to be involved in circulating fake Indian currency and wanted by Mumbai police was arrested in Murshidabad in West Bengal late Thursday night. Stacks of counterfeit notes and arms were recovered from him.

“Sadiqul Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested last night with fake currency notes with a face value of over Rs.15,000. He is suspected to be involved in several cases of dealing in counterfeit notes and is wanted by the Mumbai police,” Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir said.

Mumbai police had visited the district twice – in 2010 and 2011 – in search of Islam. An aide of his was also arrested and arms and ammunition were recovered, said Kabir.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been informed about the arrests.

Police also busted an illegal arms racket and arrested the kingpin, Wahid. Several kinds of sophisticated guns and ammunitions were recovered from him.

Wahid is said to have been instrumental in smuggling arms for a long time and police claimed he was a prized catch.
