J.S. Sarma, the present chairman, retires May 14.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has invited applications for the post. However, the committee will have the authority to consider any other names for the appointment, the DoT said in a statement.

The tenure of the post will be for 3 years or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier, at a pay scale of Rs.3.75 lakh per month.

A government employee will have to retire from the post before joining as TRAI chairman.

The new chairman will take charge at a time when TRAI would be finalising recommendations for the 2G auction following the Supreme Court’s verdict cancelling 122 telecom licences issued in 2008.
