Aligarh: The Non-Resident Student Centre, Aligarh Muslim University [AMU] organized a series of lectures and a marathon race to create public awareness about cancer.
Addressing the inaugural session of lectures, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. Sibghatullah Farooqui pointed out that, cancer is affecting a large section of the society and to wipe it out, the awareness level among masses, especially youths, needs to be enhanced. Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. M.H. Beg observed that tobacco consumption and smoking is the main reason of cancer and it has become a matter of great concern.
Principal and CMS of JN Medical College, Prof. M. Ashraf Malik said that on account of changed life style and increasing westernization of Indian society have given a surge to the dreadful disease like cancer and diabetes. He, however, said that these diseases are curable if detected at an early stage. Dean of Life Sciences faculty, Prof. Masood Ahmad said that urbanization and industrialization too are root causes for the frequent cancer cases heard nowadays. Provost, NRSC Hall, Prof. Rajeev Gulati said that these lectures have been organized to encourage people to leave with their habit of smoking and tobacco consumption.
Earlier, a Marathon Race was flagged by AMU Students Union President, Syed Shariq Ahmad. Taufeeq, Gauhar and Maraj Nawaz were awarded first, second and third prizes respectively. Organizing Secretary, Sameer Sherwani played a key role in organizing the event. Sameer said that the target of the cancer awareness program should be the younger generation, so that they do not indulge in smoking or other such habits. The Secretary of the Club, Mohd Abbas Khan elaborated on the aims and objectives of the program.
The Marathon Race and the lectures were sponsored by Sudarshan Cancer Foundation and Big FM. Joint Secretary, Ghufran Ahmad Siddiqui, Games Secretary Ahmad Nabeel Khan, Senior Hall M Nadeem Khan and Arbab Hussain actively participated in holding the events with great enthusiasm.
