Kolkata: Two days before the ‘Bharat Bandh’ (nationwide strike on 28th February), some people in Kolkata received an SMS on their mobile phones. The sender had not disclosed his identity but had written ‘Indian Mujahidin’ at the end of the SMS in which he had threatened for terror attacks on Sealdah and Howrah Railway stations and Kolkata Metro station on 28th Feb.
As soon as the Kolkata police came to know about the threat SMS, they swung into action and beefed up security at those places and in entire Kolkata. A team of the police began investigation and within 48 hours they nabbed the ‘Indian Mujahidin’ man. He wsa Souradip Singh (17), a student of a Polytechnic college in Kolkata.
Aditi Banerjee, a student of 3rd Year of Computer Science of Kolkaghat Engineering College in East Medinipur District of West Bengal had got the SMS from an unknown number where it was mentioned that the message is on behalf of Indian Mujahidin, so be careful. He got the message on 26th February.
Police Superintendent of Eeast Medinipur Ashok Prasad told reporters about the message and the arrest on 28th Feb. He said the SMS had come from mobile no 8599972756. It was written that on 28th February blasts will happen at Howrah Bridge, Howrah and Sealdah railway stations, Barabazar area (near the State Police headquarters & Chief Minister Secretariat). Below the text message was written `Indian Mujahidin’.
After getting the sms Aditi informed her parent and they quickly informed the Kolkaghat Police Station. Aditi came from Purnia district of Bihar and is studying here. On the eve of Bharat Bandh this message created lots of tension in the city. Kolkaghat Police informed the higher police officials and they started special enquiry into the case. Police officials took it seriously and tightened security all across the city. They took it seriously because the sms had come in the name of banned terrorist organization Indian Mujahidin.
After thorough probe, Police nabbed the culprit after tracing his mobile phone. They arrested Souradip Singh from his home at Suri in Birbhum district. Police have lodged a case against him under the Information Technology Act 2008, 66A. On Tuesday (28th Feb.) he was produced in the Tamluk Sub Division Court. Chief Judicial Magistrate did not grant him bail and sent him in judicial custody for one week. He will again be produced in the court on 6th March. Public prosecutor in this case, Safiul Ali Khan said Singh may face three years of prison.
According to The Statesman, a police officer said that the tower of the cell phone number was located in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
