British foreign secretary visits Myanmar

Yangon : British Foreign Secretary William Hague Thursday arrived in Myanmar on a two-day official visit.

This is the first visit by a British foreign secretary to Myanmar since 1955, Xinhua reported.

Hague will meet President U Thein Sein, Parliamentary Speaker U Shwe Mann and his Myanmar counterpart U Wunna Maung Lwin in Nay Pyi Taw, the newly founded and built national capital of Myanmar.

He will also meet National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratic activists in Yangon, the British embassy said.

Britain has pledged 185 million pounds ($289 million) over three years to fund health and education projects in Myanmar through NGOs.
