Islamabad : Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged Pakistan’s opposition parties to evolve a consensus on setting up an independent Election Commission for holding free, fair and transparent elections.Rehman has asked the opposition parties to form a consensus on three important issues comprising formation of an independent and powerful Election Commission, a caretaker set-up for holding the elections and formulation of updated electoral rolls after deleting 35 million bogus names, Dawn reported Sunday.
The elections held on the basis of the current list would not be fair because vested interests could use bogus votes to manipulate election results, the JUI-F chief told reporters Saturday.
Stating that he had already sent a message to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif for holding a meeting of opposition parties to chalk out future course of action, Rehman said he was waiting the former prime minister’s response.
About former president Pervez Musharraf’s role in politics in the coming days, Rehman said there was no future for the former army chief in politics.
A number of retired generals had in the past failed in their attempts to form political parties or carve out positions for themselves in the political field, he added.
Rehman, replying to another question, said the country was facing external and internal problems and could not afford clashes between institutions.
