Guwahati : Over 15,000 people across Assam were affected by floods triggered by incessant rains in the last two days, and officials Tuesday said water levels of major rivers, including Brahmaputra and Barak, are rising.
At least 20 villages in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts of upper Assam have been affected by the surging waters of Pisola river, the officials said, adding that at least 10 villages were hit in Baksa and Udalguri districts of lower Assam.
Official sources said that the rising water level, due to incessant rains for past two days, has led to breach of a dyke on Pisola river in Lakhimpur district and submerged a vast area. About 80 hectares of cropland have been destroyed in the district, the sources said.
Over 15,000 people have been affected in Assam after the first wave of floods hit the state.
The surging water of three rivers – Suklai, Bornodi and Naobondha – have also inundated large agricultural lands and human habitations. Some people in the two districts have left their houses and taken shelter on higher places.
The flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority also indicated that the water levels in most of the major rivers – including Brahmaputra, Burhidehing, Subansiri, Pagladia and Barak – and some of their tributaries are rising.
