Former deputy superintendent of police Lavoo Mamledar defeated the controversial Naik by 3,190 votes.

Mamledar contested from Ponda in North Goa, 30 km from here, as a nominee of the Maharashtrwadi Gomantak Party.

He narrowly lost to Naik in 2007 after resigning from police.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday after his victory, Mamledar said the police force under Naik had become unprofessional and politically driven.

“It is time to professionalise the police force. We cannot have a police force like this,” he said.
