Yangon : Myanmar President U Thein Sein Sunday called on the government, political parties, media persons and voters to cooperate in making the upcoming April 1 by-elections free and fair.
In a public speech on the state radio and television at night, Thein Sein urged all sides to strive for the successful holding of the by-elections as a landmark one, reported Xinhua.
He called on the election commission at different levels to help solve the current issues of voting lists before the elections are to take place to ensure that contesting parties and voters do not suffer loss of rights.
Victory or defeat will be decided by the people, he said.
He added that observers have been invited from the international community to monitor the elections which draw great interest from the world.
The April 1 Myanmar by-elections will be the first held under the new government.
