Moscow : A court in Russia Tuesday sentenced nine people to various terms in jail over a terror attack on a passenger train in 2009 which claimed 27 lives and left over 100 others injured.
The luxurious high-speed Nevsky Express – from Moscow to St. Petersburg – was derailed Nov 27, 2009, by two remotely-operated land mines planted under the rail tracks.
Four of the terrorists were sentenced to life in prison by the court in Tver region, Xinhua reported.
Five got seven years behind bars on charges of terrorism, murder and illegal arms trade.
Alexander Tikhomirov, 28, mastermind of the attack, was killed by Russia’s security forces in the North Caucasian republic of Ingushetia in 2010.
The accused were fined 134 million rubles ($4.5 million) in favour of the Russian Railways company.
Prosecutors said the accused were members of an extremist group.
