“This is shocking and outrageous and will surely break our backs,” said salesman Harish Rawat, who uses a scooter to commute in Delhi.

“I have no choice but to leave my scooter at home and travel by bus,” Rawat told IANS.

Shobha Kapoor, 34, was equally distraught.

“My office is in Gurgaon and there is no public transport there. Autos and buses are not safe for women. This will seriously dent my budget,” said the resident of Ghaziabad which adjoins Delhi.

The social networking sites were abuzz with criticism.

“Petrol price hiked by Rs.7.50. First, the rupee, now petrol. We’ll have to get four jobs to afford staying in India,” tweeted Meru Kahyap.

“It’s a gift to people by UPA-2 on completing the third year,” added Abhilash Chakravarth.
