Mumbai : The Congress’ Maharashtra state unit Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to roll back the steep, Rs.7.50 per litre hike in petrol prices.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice chairman Guru S. Nair said that the government should bring back black money stashed abroad and utilise that money to bail out the loss-making oil companies.
“Otherwise, we, the people of this nation, will be constrained to force you and your ministers to pass an ordinance to cut off the fat salaries and other benefits of parliamentarians, legislators and other government staff immediately,” he said in the letter, a copy of which was released to the press.
“Our neighbouring countries which are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) are also buying petrol from other countries but the prices in these nations are very low,” Nair noted.
“Why is the government putting unnecessary pressure on the common man to save the loss-making oil companies?” he asked in the letter.
