Kolkata : In the wake of yet another hike in cooking gas prices, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday described the Congress-led central government as “irresponsible and intolerable”, and urged all political parties to oppose the move.
“The present United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is really becoming irresponsible and intolerable. Time is running out. I would appeal to political parties, even those who are extending outside support, to stand up and be bold to oppose this decision. I assure you to be with you for the sake of the common people,” Banerjee said on Facebook.
The price of non-subsidised cooking gas cylinders was Thursday hiked by Rs.26.50 to Rs.922 per cylinder.
Accusing the “minority government” of taking all major policy decisions affecting the survival of common people unilaterally, Banerjee said the cap on subsidised gas cylinders and the repeated increase in their prices were being made in the “interest of a few petroleum companies”.
The Trinamool Congress supremo also accused the UPA of using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to “terrorise” other political parties.
“I have great respect for CBI as an institution. But the way they are being used for political purposes and also unnecessarily made to create problems in every state to control political parties and state governments, are not acceptable. It proves that CBI now stands for ‘Congress Bureau of Investigation’,” she said.
“I am told from different sources that the present UPA Government has developed a feeling that there is nobody to change their decision because the present government is using CBI Stick to terrorize,” the post on the social networking site said.
Banerjee also indicted newly-appointed union ministers from West Bengal of “threatening other political parties” and said the Congress did not believe in the democratic system of functioning.
Stating that people were the supreme authority in a democracy, she said “it was the right time for the people of India to build public opinion against the UPA II Government”.
“Let us be united and fight the battle against unethical decisions of the minority Government which is imposing burden on the common people,” added Banerjee.
