Opposition to reforms turned vested interests against us: Mamata

By IANS,

Kolkata : Giving a long list of cinema halls where the controversial Bengali movie “3 Kanya” was being screened, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday accused the media of colluding with the opposition to malign her government’s image.

“For the last several months, it is becoming clear that a section of the media has been raising non-issues for their own vested interests, the sole purpose of which is to malign the (image) of the present government through misinformation and concocted stories,” wrote Banerjee on her Facebook page.

“It is being done in collusion with political parties like the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and the Congress,” she added.

She said that her opposition to the economic reforms initiated by the Congress-led central government has prompted “vested interests” to run a malicious campaign against her.

“You may wonder, what would be the motive of this section of the so-called media to plant such stories without any basis. Our ministers resigned from the union government as a mark of protest against the introduction of FDI in multi-brand retail and pension sector.”

“This bold step has put some vested interests in an uncomfortable situation,” Banerjee wrote.

Recently, her government drew flak from several quarters after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation-run Star theatre refused the screening of “3 Kanya” for being “anti-government”. The KMC board is controlled by the Trinamool.

“If the government is determined to ban the film, how is it possible that it is being shown at all these places. Obviously, the answer is that it is a well-designed campaign against the government to embarrass and humiliate it,” she said.

“Even though the state administration has done splendid work, there has been a deliberate attempt to suppress it. A section of the media is unknowingly using incorrect information without ascertaining the full details and proper cross-checking,” the chief minister wrote.
