Speaking at a function here organised by the Rashtriya Godhan Mahasangh, Sushma Swaraj said the directive principles talked about protection of cow from slaughter.

She said cow was the cornerstone of rural economy.

She did not name the UPA government but said the it was not doing enough to protect cows.

“Cow protection is mentioned in the directive principles. The rulers with foreign thinking have forgotten their duties,” said Sushma Swaraj, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha.

She agreed with speakers at the function who complained about illegal trade of cows in some parts of the country.

“Trucks (carrying cows) go openly,” she said.

Sushma Swaraj said protection of cows was a non-partisan issue and she would talk to members of parliament from other parties to raise the issue during the winter session of parliament.
