International Conference on Physical and Sports Education

Aligarh: Inaugurating a three-day International Conference on “Physical Education and Sports Science-2012” at the Aligarh Muslim University, former Captain of Indian Hockey Team, Zafar Iqbal said that psychology and physiology are very important subjects now a days in sport science and we are lagging behind sports due to sport psychologist.

He said that Australia is leading in the sports science. He said that we should understand the value of physical education.

Iqbal, an alumnus of AMU, said that the students of this University should be encouraged in sports activities and a ‘run for the fun’ should be organized.

Presiding over the inaugural session, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brigadier (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali directed the Chairman, Department of Physical Health and Sports Education to evolve sports policy for the University students so that they are encouraged to participate in games and sports.

He assured that the University administration would relax the attendance if the students performed better and brought laurels to the University in sports activities.

Brigadier Ali said that the University has sanctioned Rs. 18 Lacs for Basketball Court and Volleyball Court in every hall of residence. He said that educational institutions should give priority to discipline, excellence in academia, job placement and sports.

Olympiad, Squadron Leader S. Shahid Hakim said that research is very essential in sports education. He pointed out that India won medals in elite games and games of the masses are still not encouraged. He suggested that 20% marks should be made compulsory for sports education in the University curricula.

In his welcome address, Prof. Ikram Husain, Chairman, Department of Physical Health and Sports Education said that the objective of the three day Conference is to initiate towards establishing research in Physical Education and Sports Science to pursue higher potential research topics of interest for elite Indian sports for future Olympics.

He said that AMU’s Department of Physical Health Education is the only centre in India which has been accorded SAP-DRS programme by the UGC and it has Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes. It has carried out several research projects for the UGC and MHRD.
