“The authority has suspended the personal security guard, Shyamal Das, and the police on its own have registered a case against him,” Inspector General of Police Nepal Das told IANS, adding that a departmental inquiry has also begun.

Shyamal Das, personal security guard of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Tapan Das, while cleaning his service revolver at his residence, discharged a bullet “by mistake”, hitting his mother-in-law Arati Das, 58.

The woman was admitted to hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical.

The incident occurred Wednesday night at Melaghar in western Tripura, 55 km west of Agartala.

The issue has rocked state politics, and the main opposition Congress has sought that the government order either a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or a judicial commission.

The CPI-M said that the Congress, ahead of assembly elections in Tripura, was making a mountain out of a molehill.
