Mamata doesn’t have numbers for no-confidence motion: Joshi

Kolkata : With Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee planning to bring a no-confidence motion against the UPA, opposition BJP Tuesday said she did not have the numbers to defeat the ruling alliance in the Lok Sabha.

“First of all, we have not received any official letter or notice from them (Trinamool) regarding it. So the question of whether we will support it or not doesn’t arise now. Anybody can bring in a no-confidence motion. But in order to make it a success (topple the government), you need numbers,” veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said here.

Banerjee, at a rally against foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in New Delhi Monday, had said her party might bring a no-confidence motion against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the next parliament session.

“She might propose a no-confidence motion. But right now it seems that the government still has the numbers to defeat a no-confidence motion. But Mamata still doesn’t have the numbers to make a no-confidence motion a success,” Joshi said.

When asked about the presence of opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convener and JD-U leader Sharad Yadav at the rally, Joshi said: “It was a protest against retail FDI. So anybody who is against it can go. Even when a Bharat bandh was called, you have seen that Sitaram Yechury of CPI-M along with BJP leaders were protesting retail FDI.”

Joshi, however, reacted in a lighter vein when asked about the possibility of Banerjee joining the NDA.

“The doors of BJP are open for everybody. So if Mamata-di wants to join the BJP, then its OK,” he said.
