“An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today,” the NATO-led ISAF said in a press release issued on Monday, reported Xinhua.

However, the statement didn’t reveal more details of the incident or the nationality of the victim, only saying “it is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities”.

The Taliban insurgents, who have been waging more than a decade-long insurgency, on May 3 launched a new wave of rebel offensive to target Afghan forces as well as US and NATO troops across the country.

A total of 323 NATO soldiers with majority of them Americans have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.
