Chandigarh : Punjabi farmers based in Bhuj and Kutch Monday sought the intervention of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal amid fears of being divested of their land under a tenancy act in Gujarat.
The farmers fear that they will be driven away from their own land that they had been ploughing for over 40 years.
The delegation of farmers, based in Bhuj and Kutch area of Gujarat, told Badal that farmers with Punjab and Haryana origin were being divested of their land under the Bombay Tenancy and Agricultural Lands (Vidarbha region) Act.
They said that the move was “totally unjust and unreasonable” as these farmers had developed the barren land of Gujarat into fertile one with their constant hard work and labour.
“Despite having all legal and revenue documents in their possession, now they were being denied legitimate ownership rights over the agricultural land,” Surinder Singh Bhullar, an affected farmer, told Badal here.
He said that nearly 1,000 farmers were being uprooted by the Gujarat government.
The 17-member delegation of Punjabi farmers from Bhuj and Kutch area met Badal with senior Akali Dal leader and former union minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.
Badal assured the members that he would take up the matter with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command for an early redressal.
