Islamabad : A total of 1,725 people, including 78 children, were killed in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi in the first eight months of this year, says a report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).
The report titled “Killings in Karachi – January to August 2012” said the dead included 227 political activists who were murdered in “targeted killings”, Daily Times reported Monday.
At least 146 were personnel from law enforcement agencies, 78 were children and 107 were women. A total of 49 were killed in “other mishaps”.
The report said 1,345 people were victims of target killings, 34 were murdered in sectarian killings, 226 were abducted and killed, 493 non-political people and 227 political activists were murdered, two people burnt to death, 52 killed by robbers and 137 were killed over enmity.
Five people were killed in prison, 11 in bomb blasts and 93 killed in gang wars.
At least 68 policemen and eight soldiers and paramilitary personnel died in the city, while one person was allegedly killed by a soldier, the report said.
Among the children, many died after falling into canals and open drains, some were abducted, raped and killed, some died in gang wars, by stray bullets, while some were even killed by robbers.
Seven bodies of newborns were also found, the report said.
Among women, 39 were killed by relatives, four were burnt to death, four killed by robbers and four in gang wars.
Among those who were killed in mishaps, six were drug addicts who were found dead, 11 killed by stray bullets, 14 killed on railway tracks, while 18 were killed after consuming toxic wine.
