Rio de Janeiro : Chevron will be fined $17 million for an offshore oil spill rather than the nearly $25 million announced in July, the head of Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency, or ANP, said Monday.
Chevron Corp. has been assessed a penalty of 35.1 million reais ($17 million) for 24 of the 25 infractions identified as contributing to the November 2011 accident, Magda Chambriard told reporters at the Rio Oil & Gas Fair.
She noted, however, that the fine could increase by 2 million reais ($1 million) depending on how the ANP evaluates the 25th infraction.
The ANP is still reviewing Chevron’s application to resume operations in Brazil and will make its decision without regard to a judge’s ruling that the US-based giant must abandon the South American country, Chambriard said.
