New Delhi : Demanding a rollback of the UPA’s recent economic decisions, the BJP Wednesday said it was considering the demand for a special session of parliament over the government’s decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail not having a majority support in the Lok Sabha.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the party would take a decision in this regard in consultation with allies after Thursday’s nation-wide protest.
“We demand rollback of coal block allocations, hike in price of diesel, foreign direct investment in retail and the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders. These four decisions are one-sided decisions,” Javadekar said.
Earlier, BJP leader L.K. Advani had said that BJP could demand a special session of parliament as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured that the government would discuss the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail with chief ministers and create a consensus before taking a decision, according to Javadekar.
He added that majority of members in parliament are against the “anti-people” decisions of the government.
The BJP spokesman said people were demanding that the government should either roll back its decisions or go.
Another BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told TV channel NDTV that President Pranab Mukherjee should ask the government to prove its majority after the Trinamool Congress’ decision to withdraw support to The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance.
He said the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government was also asked to prove its majority in 1999 after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) withdrew support and it lost by one vote.
He said the Trinamool Congress has not only withdrawn its ministers but also its support to the UPA government.
“It is the duty of president (to ask the government) to prove its majority in Lok Sabha,” Sinha said.
