The government has sought the assistance of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau. “We have written to (them),” P. Ringu, deputy chief conservator of forest (wildlife), told IANS.

On Tuesday, the government ordered an inquiry into the incident. Poachers broke into the cage of six-year-old tiger Oni Monday night and hacked it to pieces. The zoo guards had gone out for dinner.

The zoo houses many endangered species like clouded leopard, hoolock gibbon, Slow Loris, capped Langur and Royal Bengal Tiger.

In June 2010, customs officials seized a full-grown Royal Bengal Tiger skeleton from the Guwahati airport.
