Four held for murdering police official

New Delhi : Four men have been arrested here for murdering a policeman who tried to stop them from stealing cows for slaughter, police said Friday.

Rahis, 23, Mubarak, 30, Jamshed, 23 and Aarif, 25, all residents of Mewat in Haryana, used to steal cows from the outskirts of Delhi.

On the night of Aug 24, head constable Yashpal Singh, 49, was returning home when he saw the gang loading some cows in a truck in Hari Das Nagar in west Delhi.

He tried to stop them, triggering a scuffle in which Singh was shot in the head.

Rahis was arrested Sep 25. He admitted that he and nine others were involved in the murder.

Two others, Jamshed and Arif, were arrested Sep 27 while a fourth man, Mubarak, was held Friday from Najafgarh in west Delhi.

According to police, the truck used by the gang to smuggle cows was modified and had heavy iron bumpers to severely damage any police vehicle trying to stop it.

Further, the gang kept heavy stones in the truck and threw them at any chasing police vehicle. There were instances when they even threw cows on to police cars.
