Panaji: Goa has to enforce the rule of law especially to preserve its eco-system from the rapacious hordes of tourists who hit its shores by hundreds of thousands annually, Nobel prize winner R.K. Pachauri said Sunday.
Pachauri was speaking in the capital as part of a state sponsored lecture series.
“People come to Goa for short periods and they are looking for something in return. They are not concerned about the health of the environment or the regulations. Laws have to be enforced by which tourism does not become ‘distortionary’ in nature,” said Pachauri, who heads the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Goa gets nearly 2.4 million tourists annually, who flock to its beaches and the mild winter sun.
Pachauri also cautioned Goa against becoming like Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla, which he said was on it way to becoming a slum.
“Goa has a bounty of an eco-system which has to be preserved,” he said.
