New Delhi : Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien Thursday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi over his alleged involvement in the 17-year-old Suryanelli sex scandal, said informed sources here.
“Yes, he has met the Congress president,” a source told IANS.
According to the sources, Kurien explained his position to Gandhi. The party has been backing him since the apex court has already cleared him.
Kurien has been dragged into the Suryanelli rape case again, after the victim, now 32 year old, repeatedly claimed that he was among those who exploited her in 1996.
The Suryanelli sex scandal gets its name from the place in Idukki district from where the victim hailed. In January 1996, a 16-year-old girl was threatened, abducted and abused by a bus conductor, and later taken from place to place for 45 days and subjected to sexual assault by 42 men.
