“About 120 inmates are set to finish higher education degrees like MBA (Master of Business Administration) B.Com and other courses, while 120 convicts will complete their 10+2,” the official told IANS.

The official said that inmates who pursued higher studies do not have pay fees, as their education is provided free by the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

“From this year onward, students of 10+2 might be exempted from paying fees too, as the director of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has assured free education for them,” he said.

Every sub-prison, of which there are nine within Tihar, has its own NIOS study centre.

As many as 342 inmates were given jobs through a “campus” placement process last year.

“The campus placements were conducted in central jail number 2 and number 3 last year. Only such convicts were selected for interview who had maintained consistently good conduct in the prison and were likely to be released within the next six months,” the officer said.
