New Delhi : Screen doors that open only when a metro train reaches the platform can curb growing suicides at Delhi Metro stations, the network’s volunteers said Thursday.

Such doors should come up on every platform in the sprawling network, Rajiv Kumar, one of eight Delhi Metro volunteers who were felicitated here Thursday, told IANS.

The Metro has in the past rejected the idea, citing the huge costs involved. But with increasing suicides on the network, the idea refuses to die.

According to officials, 25 people committed suicide last year in Metro platforms, mostly by jumping before incoming trains. One suicide has been reported this year.

Harikishan, another volunteer, said such doors will also help in managing long queues on platforms during rush hours.

Delhi Metro has 600 volunteers who help it to manage commuters.

Metro chief Mangu Singh said he planned to increase the height of grills at the elevated stations to prevent people from jumping on to the roads in an attempt to commit suicide.
