US asks Sri Lanka to ensure freedom to speak

Colombo : The US has voiced concern over attacks on civil society activists in Sri Lanka and urged the government to ensure people’s fundamental right to speak freely.

“The US embassy is disturbed by the series of threats and attacks against legal defenders, civil society organisations and activists who have spoken out on recent events,” the mission said in a statement.

“The right to express opinions freely is universal and one that is protected under Sri Lankan law.

“We urge the government (to) protect this fundamental right and ensure that all citizens are able to express their opinions without fear of retribution,” it said.
