Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Wednesday said his government is considering taking legal steps against Tamil Nadu for not honouring the Parambikulam-Aliyar river pact.
“Letters written from here asking Tamil Nadu to honour the PAP have gone unnoticed. An all-party meet held here today asked for a meeting of the chief ministers of the two states and also to see that legal steps are taken,” Chandy told reporters here.
Parambikulam Dam is an embankment dam on the Parambikulam river located in the Palakkad district in the Western Ghats of Kerala. The dam is owned and operated by Tamil Nadu, with an agreement that it should give water for irrigation needs of parts of Palakkad district.
“With Tamil Nadu failing to release the water, there has been a drought-like situation in Palakkad district and we will now seek compensation for the huge loss of crops,” said Chandy.
The joint water regulation board meets every six months to discuss water-sharing between the two neighbours.
