New Delhi : One hundred patrol vans were added to the Delhi Police control room fleet Monday.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde oversaw the event, saying the new vehicles would help police check crime in the capital.
After the Dec 16 gang rape of a young woman in the city, the government sanctioned purchase of 370 new police control room vans.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar, the remaining vans will be added to the fleet soon.
“The policemen (in these vans) will carry Glock pistols and MP5 sub-machine guns, which are easy to handle, accurate and reliable,” said an officer.
As of now, police personnel in patrolling vehicles had been using Sten guns.
With the addition of 370 vans, the number of patrol vans with Delhi Police will go up to 1,000. Delhi Police now has 630 vans, but 150 of them are non-functional.
