NCW seeks probe in Punjab woman’s thrashing

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) Tuesday asked the Punjab Police chief to probe the attack on a woman by policemen in the state’s Tarn Taran district.

The NCW has issued a notice to the Punjab’s director general of police (DGP) to investigate the incident and apprise the commission about the actual facts of the case along with action taken report within three days.

The commission took suo motu cognizance of the media reports of the incident and sent the notice, NCW sources said.

A 23-year-old woman was allegedly harassed by a truck driver Monday while returning from a wedding party. When she approached constables, whom they spotted on the road at Tarn Taran near Amritsar, the victim alleged that instead of helping her, the police personnel took a bribe from the driver and started beating her.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Tuesday ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, while DGP Sumedh Singh Saini Monday suspended two policemen and ordered an inquiry into the incident by a superintendent of police.
